Dog Bite Statistics
According to the World Animal Foundation, there are approximately 85 million dogs in the United States, and each year those dogs will inflict an estimated 4.7 million bites. Roughly 800,000 of those dog bites will require medical care. Interestingly, 92% of fatal dog attacks involve male dogs, 94% of which are not neutered.
Chained dogs represent approximately 25% of the fatal dog attacks. While this may seem counter-intuitive, experts believe chained dogs have increased stress, protectiveness and vulnerability, which in turn increases the likelihood of them exhibiting aggressive behavior.
Where do most dog bites occur? An estimated two-thirds of the bites occur on or near the victim's property, and most victims know the dog. Roughly 24% of fatal dog attacks involved dogs which were unrestrained and off the owners' property.
Children are particularly vulnerable. An alarming 50% of dog attacks involved children under 12 years old. 82% of dog bites treated in the emergency room involved children under 15 years old. And, 70% of dog bite fatalities involved children under 10 years old. Unsupervised newborns are 370 times more likely to be killed by a dog than an adult, but the highest bite rate is for children who are 5 to 9 years old.
