For 2012-2013, 711 tort cases were filed in Chattanooga and 37 tort cases went to trial. Of those 17 trials, the injured party won 10 of them. The average award was $30,365.00. For the 2013-2014 data year, 659 tort cases were filed and 37 went to trial. The injured party won 16 of those trials with an average award of $169,198.00. In 2014-2015, 622 tort cases were filed and 47 went to trial. The injured party only won 11 of those 47 trials, and the average award was $366,059.00. For 2015-2016, 755 cases were filed, 47 went to trial, and 12 cases were awarded damages for an average of $46,715. For 2016-2017, 786 tort cases were filed and 38 went to trial (15 jury and 23 non-jury). The injury victim won 12 of those 38 trials and the average award was $35,778. In 2017-2018, 756 tort cases were filed and 32 went to trial (15 jury and 17 non-jury). Injury victims won 17 of those 32 trials (slightly better than half), and the average award was $63,545.
