Like most places in Tennessee, in the last decade, Knox County has seen a decrease in the number of tort cases tried. (Tort cases are claims for personal injury or wrongful death.) For the 2010-2011 reporting period, there were 998 tort cases filed in Knox County with 49 of those cases going all the way to a trial. Of the 49 cases tried, only 22 resulted in a verdict for the injured party. The total damages awarded for the year was $5,702,059.00 for an average award of $259,185.00. For the 2011-2012, 1,044 tort cases were filed with 45 resulting in a trial. Of the 45 cases tried, only 17 resulted in a verdict for the injured party. The average award was $90,019.00. For 2012-2013, there were 938 tort cases filed in Knox County and 38 tort cases were tried. Of the 38 tort cases that went to trial, the injured party prevailed in only 18 of them. The average award was $149,205.00. For 2013-2014, 1,007 tort cases were filed in Knox County and 61 went to trial. Of those 61 trials, only nine resulted in a verdict for the injured party, and the average award was just $24,008.00. In 2014-2015, 886 tort cases were filed and 45 were tried. Of those 45 trials, the injury victim only won 10. The average award in those 10 cases was $358,412.00. For 2015-2016, 984 tort cases were filed and 61 went to trial. The injury victim won 15 of those trials and the average of the awards was $209,703. For 2016-2017, 954 tort cases were filed and 42 were tried, but the injury victim only won 12 of those trials and the average award went way down to $20,992. During 2017-2018, 927 tort cases were filed with 37 trials and only 14 wins for the injury victims. The average award that year was $64, 062. Last year, 879 tort cases were filed and 16 were tried and the injury victims only won four of those trials. There was one large verdict (over $1 million) that skewed the average significantly upwards to $556,047. The last year referenced for this data is the 2018-2019 reporting period.
