Almost everyone has either been in a car accident or, at a minimum, has a family member or friend who was involved in a car crash. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety, there are 4.5 million licensed drivers in the State of Tennessee, and while we do it everyday, driving is a dangerous activity.
The State gathers crash data for each individual county and, from 2015 to 2019, Houston County ranked 73rd in the overall crash rate. It is not a secret that excessive alcohol and driving are a dangerous combination. But unfortunately, it still occurs. Houston County had the 5th highest rank for alcohol-impaired fatality rate and an alcohol-impaired crash rate of 3rd.
Speeding also plays its part in accidents. In Houston County, the speeding crash rate was 33rd in the State. According to the State's statistics, from 2015 to 2019, the crash rate for young drivers (age 15 to 24) in Houston County was 78th. For senior drivers (age 65+), the crash rate was also 82nd
